You can't get your food at the drive-thru without opening the door, have a tough time using the ATM from your vehicle, can't have that fresh breeze blowing through your hair as you listen to your favorite road tunes. Plus, there's a safety factor. Your windows provide an escape route in case you need to get out and the doors won't work. Let's take a look at what's going on when your window won't operate. Most vehicles these days have power windows. They have an electric motor in each power window and sometimes those fail. They often give you a warning that they're on their last legs by making a noise or hesitating, so if you get a sign like that, have a technician check it out. Loss of power can also be due to a blown fuse, a bad switch or faulty wiring. All windows have something called a regulator that moves the glass up and down. They have a lot of moving parts in them which can break, become bent, rust or get out of alignment. The glass moves along a window track guide. Sometimes if the glass gets out of the track, it won't move up and down the way it's designed to do. When you take your vehicle over to a repair facility, a technician can pinpoint the cause of your malfunctioning window. Often it involves having to remove the door panel to gain access to the components inside. But when everything's working right, you'll be able to throw that annoying inconvenience right out the window. Matt Davis Auto A Most Important Part (Serpentine Belt Replacement)Posted January 18, 2026 12:36 PMYour vehicle’s engine is an engineering work of wonder with many complex parts working in harmony to get you down the road. One of those simple but important components is called a serpentine belt. It is driven by a pulley on the engine and transfers that power to many of your engine’s most important components. The serpentine belt may drive the alternator, water pump, power steering pump and air conditioning compressor. When it’s working like it should, you won’t even notice the serpentine belt. But when it starts to fail, you may hear a squealing noise coming from under the hood as the belt starts slipping. Heat and time take their toll on the serpentine belt, causing it to crack or even to start shredding. When this happens, it may not drive your alternator correctly, and your battery light may come on. If the water pump isn’t turning, your engine may overheat, causing the heat gauge to show hotter than usual. When the serpentine belt isn’t doing its job, it’s important to get it serviced very soon. Letting it go too long can result in many more expensive repairs to multiple parts on your vehicle, especially if the belt breaks. Regular vehicle maintenance is important, and an inspection of your serpentine belt should be one of those things you should have one of our technicians do periodically. While the belts can last for years, it’s important to detect any beginning of wear earlier rather than later. In addition to the condition of the belt, the technician can also check to make sure pulleys are aligned properly and that the belt is routed correctly. Your vehicle’s serpentine belt is one of those components that you won’t even notice when it’s doing its job, and maintaining it will help you avoid surprises at the worst possible time. Matt Davis Auto The Puzzling Puddle (Leaks Under Vehicle)Posted January 11, 2026 1:54 AMEver notice a little spot of liquid under your vehicle after you've parked in your driveway or garage? It may have been something as simple as water left from air conditioning condensation. But then again, it could be a sign that there's trouble brewing in one of your vehicle's systems. You can help your service facility diagnose the problem by getting a little sample of the drip. At the same time, you may save yourself a tougher clean up task by preventing the leaky fluid from really messing up the driveway or garage floor. The first thing is to put something under the vehicle. A flattened out cardboard box will do fine. You may also want to slip a little disposable aluminum tray or pan under it to catch a bit of the fluid. Chroma and consistency can help a technician quickly figure out what kind of fluid you're dealing with. You can take your sample with you when you go to your service facility. Also note how much of the substance is there over what period of time, when you started to notice it and its location relative to the vehicle. Is it on the passenger's or driver's side? Front, middle or back? Vehicle's have different designs, so where their equipment is located will depend on make and model. The leaky fluid will have a certain look to it and consistency. If it's blue, it may be windshield washer fluid and a sign that your washer fluid tank has a leak. If it's green, it could be antifreeze. Orange may mean rusty water or transmission fluid. Brown? Might be oil. There should be no leaks in your powertrain if things are maintained properly. A small leak may not seem like a big deal, but sometimes they can get much bigger quickly. A coolant leak, for example, may suddenly go from pinhole to flood, draining your cooling system and putting your engine in danger of overheating. It is a really good idea to have a professional check out your leaks as soon as you notice them. And the more clues you can provide, the happier the technician will be as the search for the problem gets underway. Matt Davis Auto Cabin Air Filter and Engine Air Filter: What?s the Difference?Posted January 4, 2026 1:20 AMYou may have heard someone say they just got the air filter replaced in their vehicle. But did you know your vehicle has two different major air filters and they both perform quite different—but very important—duties? Today’s vehicles have a cabin air filter, and an engine air filter. The engine air filter cleans the air that enters your engine so it can run better, and so contaminants don’t foul vital parts. While the cabin air filter keeps the air inside the vehicle’s cabin clean, the place where you and your passengers sit. It is important that you have each of these types of filters changed at regular intervals, or earlier if either shows signs that they’re contaminated. Your vehicle’s owner’s manual often will recommend how long that interval should be. First, let’s look at the engine air filter. Your vehicle’s manufacturer will offer guidelines on how often you should change the engine air filter as a matter of routine, by mileage or time interval. If you see signs of engine air contamination, such as misfiring, an illuminated check engine light, smoke coming out of your tailpipe, or loss of power, you may need to have the engine air filter replaced sooner. Next, the cabin air filter. Again, the vehicle manufacturer will suggest how often you should replace it. But if you notice excess dust in the cabin, on the dash, console or seats, a bad smell in the cabin, or lower air flow out the heating and cooling ducts, you should have us check to see if your cabin air filter needs replacing.
